Non-Cancerous Prostate Conditions

Certain non-cancerous prostate conditions may have similar symptoms to prostate cancer, but they do not increase the risk of developing it. However, it’s important to see a physician if you experience symptoms like difficulty urinating or pain.

  1. Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)
BPH is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate that can compress the urethra (the tube carrying urine out of the body), making urination difficult or painful. BPH is common in men over 70 and is typically treated with medication.
  2. Prostatitis
Prostatitis is an infection of the prostate and the leading cause of urinary tract infections in men. Symptoms include fever, chills, painful or burning urination, and difficulty urinating. While some studies have suggested a link between prostate inflammation and prostate cancer, this is still debated. The connection may be due to increased cancer screenings when prostate symptoms are present.
