Our Special Projects

Learn about our groundbreaking projects addressing prostate cancer and improving health outcomes for Black men.

Family Genetics in Prostate Cancer

In collaboration with Dr. Neil Fleshner, a renowned Urologist at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, The Walnut Foundation is leading the charge in understanding the genetic factors behind the higher rates of prostate cancer among Black men.

Dr. Neil Fleshner, a respected Urologist from Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, is working alongside The Walnut Foundation to better understand the genetic factors that contribute to the higher incidence of prostate cancer in Black men. This exciting project will use blood samples from patients with aggressive prostate cancer to look at genetic mutations across the entire genome. This will not only provide important information about the role of genetics in developing prostate cancer, but can be used to identify families who may not be aware of their inherited risk of developing prostate (or related) cancers.

A Culturally Sensitive Approach

Patient partners and The Walnut Foundation are working closely with the research team to develop culturally sensitive strategies for sharing genetic results with patients and their families. The goal is to ensure these insights are both accessible and impactful for the community.

Community Outreach and Education

This project goes beyond research, actively engaging the community through:

  • Health Fairs to raise awareness about genetic risks and prostate cancer.
  • Mobile PSA Testing to bring health screenings closer to the community (coming soon!).
  • Educational Materials designed to inform doctors and empower patients with knowledge.

    UBC Men’s Health Research Study:

    Sharing Life After Prostate Surgery

The Walnut Foundation is pleased to share a research opportunity from the UBC Men’s Health Research Program for men who have undergone prostate cancer surgery.

Researchers are seeking participants to better understand the experiences of men after a prostatectomy, with a focus on recovery, relationships, quality of life, and the challenges faced during the first two years following surgery. The findings will help improve support, care, and resources for men living beyond prostate cancer treatment.

    Who Can Participate?

You may be eligible if you:

    • Identify as a man
    • Are 45 years of age or older
    • Have undergone a prostatectomy within the past 24 months
    • Are currently partnered
    • Can read, write, and speak English
    • Live in Canada

    Why Participate?

By sharing your experience, you can help advance prostate cancer research and contribute to improving support services for other men and their families navigating life after treatment.

Participants will be eligible to receive an honorarium in recognition of their time and contribution.
