Earl Miller started his prostate cancer journey two decades ago. Prior to diagnosis, he knew very little about the disease and was not screened by his family physician until he was in his fifties. Since then, he has undergone surgery, radiation therapy, taken cancer medications and is monitored regularly. Since 2022, he has been a patient partner at UHN working with a research team committed to improving prostate cancer outcomes for black men. As part of the project, he interviewed black prostate cancer patients and community leaders to better understand their knowledge of the disease and perceptions of PSA screening and genetic testing. The findings are being summarized for future publication in an academic journal. Earl is a husband, father and grandfather and is deeply committed to equitable access to health care. In 2023, he received the UHN President’s Award as a patient partner.
